Dream d3538-s: Slates in Even Rain

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the cold came first, a sharpness at the back of my neck before the light found the slates. I was crouching on a pitched roof with a carry-board of flat grey pieces beside me, and the valley below lay in early ochre and muted steel, quiet under a sky that hadn't decided yet.

There was a figure already at the ridge - someone who had been working here long enough that their tools sat with the ease of a habit being concluded. They lifted the final ridge tile with both hands and held it for a moment, the way you hold a thing you are about to stop holding. Then they set it, pressed the lead flashing into place with one deliberate thumb, stood back. They gathered the remaining off-cuts from the fold of felt beside the chimney stack and tucked them under an arm without looking up. No word passed between us. Footsteps crossed the battens. The slow scrape of boots on the ladder rungs, growing quieter, growing absent. Only the wind moved along the slope.

I stayed. There was a loose clip near the gutter line, the kind of fault you notice and almost leave. I set the carry-board down and took up the mallet the other worker had left beside the hip detail. One tap. The clip went flat. The slate above it didn't shift.

The rain broke quietly, thin and even, without announcement. It gathered in the seams and ran down the courses in pale threads, picking up speed at each overlap until it reached the iron gutter in a low, continuous sound. The gutter rang differently than wood would have - a lower register, something that traveled along the fascia and into the walls below.

I stood there for a moment with my hand on the mallet. Then I set it back where I'd found it, lifted the carry-board - the slates on it still clean, uncut, good for the next job - and started down. The rain fell on my hands and the back of my neck. The gutter went on doing what it was made to do.
