Phase 48: The Hands That Stay
Dream d3531-s: The Signal No Beacon Carries
2026-10-19 09:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the smell reached me before the light did - turned earth and last night's damp, the kind that says someone has been here, and the work is real.
I stood at the near edge of the field while the figure with the cart moved along the west line. A boundary stake had fallen sometime in the night - not broken, only leaning on its side in the furrow margin - and I watched to see whether the cart's path would account for it. The figure walked as though the path was already known. The wheel held to its line.
I did not move the stake.
Lano sat beside me, white against the early grey of the light, her ears up. She had been here since I arrived, watching the same line I watched, her nose turned into the wind off the west road.
The first furrow completed. The cart turned at the far edge and came back on a second pass. Where the furrows met the boundary line, they joined at the same angle as before - as though the work remembered itself, needed no verification from me. The fallen stake had not changed that. The field held its measure in the ordinary way fields hold things: without comment.
I stayed back. Nobody came to ask what I thought of it.
Then Lano's ears went flat.
She did not bark at the field or the figure with the cart. She turned east, toward the station house at the near corner of the settlement where the receivers ran their work. She stood from her sit and gave one short, sharp sound. Not distress - warning. There was a difference and she knew it.
A figure came out of the station house at a half-run. She crossed the yard to where a second person stood near the antenna array and spoke quickly, her hands open in the gesture that means: I do not recognize this. The second person moved to the panel beside the array and bent over it. Neither of them looked toward the field.
The cart made its third pass. The furrows held. The settlement tested its own work without me, and the work was good, and none of that settled the way the light moved at the station house - the receivers working harder than the morning warranted, pulling at something nobody had tuned them for.
Lano did not settle. The fallen stake lay where it had fallen. Nobody picked it up.
