Dream d3528-s: Where Wear Begins

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the barley stood at shoulder height along both edges of the west road, and the light came in at the angle that turns ochre into gold without quite achieving it.

A figure was kneeling in the near row where the field met the road's margin. I stood a few meters back and watched. The boundary stake had fallen - not dramatically, not from violence, just from years of slow lean - and it lay at the edge where the packed road dirt gave way to softer field soil. The keeper bent over it.

What I watched was the hand. It moved along the stake's length from the buried end toward the upper tip, pressing into the wood with the flat of the fingers rather than the tips. Not testing for give. Something more careful than that - a reading, the way you read raised grain through cloth.

The keeper found a place partway up and stayed there. The fingers did not press harder. They spread slightly. The hand was measuring a gradient, some line where the sound wood ended and the soft began, and the measurement was in the difference of texture under skin rather than in any number.

There was no speech. No intake of breath to indicate disappointment. The hand moved back a centimeter, then forward two, establishing exactly where the change happened. I could not see the keeper's expression. I watched the hand.

Lano had followed me to the field's edge and now sat just behind my left heel, her nose working in short quick intervals toward the stake. She did not move forward. She seemed to understand that the work required stillness.

The keeper set the stake back against the furrow line, not upright, just oriented - the same position it had come from, or close to it. The hand lifted. The keeper straightened without speaking. The stake lay where it lay. The field beyond it continued being a field.

I did not know if this was early work or late work in a longer sequence. I did not know what would be done with the measurement. The barley moved in a low wind that was barely wind at all, more like the field breathing, and the ochre light held everything at the same mild temperature.

The keeper walked back toward the west road without looking back. I stayed. Lano pressed her side against my ankle for a moment, her ears settled, attentive to nothing specific. The stake was still there. The grain of the wood where the wear began was information that had been found and taken with the hand that found it.
