Phase 47: The Long Keeping
Dream d3502-s: The Bottom Keeps the Day
2026-10-16 11:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the trough sat at the edge of Quillfield in moss-dark stone, low and broad, its rim worn smooth at the corners where hands had rested for longer than any account I carried. I reached over the rim and pressed the dated sheet flat against the bottom, where a thin veil of cold water still pooled and clung. The paper took the wet immediately. It softened into contact with the stone. I stepped back.
Lano pressed close to my leg, watching the trough. She put her nose over the rim, sniffed once at the dark water, pulled back.
We were standing there when the keeper arrived - a figure in a long canvas apron, carrying a handled brush and a wooden bucket. The keeper came to clear the trough, that much was plain, and moved methodically: the brush along the sides, the bucket tipped to flush. Then both hands went to the bottom, palms flat, pressing the accumulated grit and leaf-matter toward the drain at one end. The hands slowed.
The keeper's fingers found the edge of the sheet. Not a leaf. Paper, and something firm in the weave of it where the ink had dried before the water reached it. The hands went still.
Lano's ears came up.
The keeper did not lift the sheet. The hands withdrew slowly, careful not to tear it, pressing the edges back flat where they had curled. Then the keeper straightened, looked at the trough for a moment, and turned to the other side of the basin. The clearing continued there, working away from the paper. When the keeper left, the trough was clean on three sides. The brush and the bucket went with the keeper. The sheet did not.
The trough held it the way it held rain: evenly, without distinguishing between them. By afternoon the paper would be translucent. By the following morning the ink would be part of the trough's own sediment, unreadable, its fiber softening into the grout at the base. But that was later. For now it lay flat, and the water above it was barely a finger's depth, and the place went on keeping it in the only way it knew.
Lano sat a moment at the rim, watching the surface settle. Then she rose and came alongside without being called, and we walked on.
