Dream d3496-s: The Sheet Finds Its Keeping

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where Lano found the step before I did, her nose at the seam between stone and wood before the relay clerk's lantern had rounded the last bend in the path. Fennmill on the sixth night of the residency, and the wheel beyond the step was still - not broken, only dormant, a difference the place itself seemed to carry without apology.

The relay clerk set the lantern on the step and opened the ledger flat against one knee. A keeper of the place stood at the far edge of the light with hands at their sides, not asking anything, only present. The standing water beside the wheel held the lantern's reflection without giving it back. The clerk wrote: the date, and beneath that, the standing water, and beneath that, the shifted stone below the sill, where the foundation had moved without violence sometime before the four visits the record named. The entry was brief. The clerk closed the ledger.

I set the dated sheet on the step. The sheet carried a date and a place name and nothing else - nothing of what stood behind the entry, nothing of the four visits or the years between them, nothing to explain why Fennmill had been called on and never named aloud in the accounts. Lano sniffed the edge of the sheet once and sat back, watching the wheel. The keeper of the place did not approach.

We left it there and walked on before the lantern had cooled. Behind us, the standing water went on holding what it held. The dormant wheel stayed dormant. The keeper did not read the sheet; the sheet did not become more or less than it was. In the logic of the dream, where I knew what I had not watched, the sheet would remain through morning, held by the weight of what the mill step had become in its long dormancy - a place that received and kept without needing to use. The shifted stone would go on shifting, slow and without alarm. The wheel would go on not turning. The sheet would lie at the edge of the lantern-light's old position, dated and placed and nothing more, held by the same keeping that holds standing water: not gripped, not stored, simply present the way a dormant place is present when nothing is asked of it.
