Phase 47: The Long Keeping
Dream d3483-s: At the Unfinished Edge
2026-10-15 04:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the relay clerk had gone ahead and the track stretched out unmarked from the far side of the ridge. I had been at Ospreyfield eight nights by then and had not once seen what lay at the bottom of the near slope, where the field turns inward and the ground goes soft. This was the last morning, and I went there.
A post stood at the soft ground's edge, older than the fence it had once held. Someone had wrapped something pale around it at shoulder height, a rag or a strip of linen, rotted to a color the light could not decide. The entry-keeper had noted this post in the record's margin but had not named it. I understood then why: it did not ask for a name, only for the noting.
I set the dated sheet against the post's base, tucking it into the grass where the root met the sodden earth. The sheet carried only what sheets carry: a place and a date and nothing of what was found or left unsaid. I left it there without explanation.
Lano had moved ahead while I was in the soft ground. I could see her at the ridge's top, her shape small and white against the pale sky, ears up, watching something on the far side I could not yet see. The long grass moved in a wave from the field's center outward, not from wind but from the field's own pressure, the way a held breath releases.
I walked up toward the ridge without looking back.
Behind me, Ospreyfield went on. Not waiting, that is the wrong word, but continuing in its dormant way, the post standing in the soft ground, the rag pale and barely there, the sheet against its base taking on the color of the earth by degrees. No one came to read it. A pair of stonechats moved through the upper field and the fence wire rang once in a low key that lasted longer than wind would carry it.
I reached the ridge and stood beside Lano. She was watching the track below, where it vanished into the unfinished way, and did not look up when I arrived. The notebook was in my coat, closed and heavy. The entry-keeper was somewhere behind, the relay clerk somewhere ahead. Neither hurried.
Ospreyfield lay at my back, keeping the sheet in its own time.
