Dream d3467-s: The Well Stops Drawing

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood at the low rise behind Juniperfold with the sheet folded once in my coat pocket. Below me, the roofs lay in their rows, and the washing lines between them held the last of the day's linens in the cooling air. The well was a small ring of stone at the center of the yard, and I could see, even from here, that it had gone quiet in a way wells do not ordinarily go quiet.

Lano stood beside me at the crest. Her ears were flat against her skull. She watched the yard below and did not move, and when a figure, the keeper, appeared at the well's edge and crouched to examine something below the rim, Lano gave one short bark and was still again.

I came down the slope with the sheet in hand. The keeper was pulling at a length of pipe fitted with a salvaged coupling, iron and rubber held by wire and old patience, and I could see from the small scorched ring on the ground that something had burned. The coupling was blackened at one end. The mechanism that drew water from the depth of the stone ring had stopped, and the keeper turned it over in both hands and set it down without speaking.

The relay clerk stood a few feet back, making no record of this. The entry-keeper leaned against the outer wall of the nearest building, watching the well with the attentiveness of someone who has seen things fail before and knows the particular silence that follows.

I set the sheet at the well's rim, in the gap between two stones where a folded paper could sit without the wind taking it. The date was on it. The place was on it. Nothing of the account.

The keeper looked at it for a moment and then back at the coupling in her hand. She turned to the entry-keeper and held it up. The entry-keeper shook her head once. The part did not exist in any stock I knew of, and by their faces it did not exist in theirs either.

Lano padded to the well's edge and sniffed at the stone rim, ears still flat, tail low. She sat beside the sheet and watched the yard.

The washing moved on its lines above. The roofs held their shapes. The sheet stayed where I left it, a date and a place, and the settlement went on around the dark mouth of the well with the particular busyness of people who do not yet know what they will do but have not yet stopped working.

I walked on.
