Phase 46: The Kept Account
Dream d3434-s: What Stays Open
2026-10-11 10:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I laid the notebook open on a stall board at the edge of Umbermarket square and stepped back. The pages caught a low lamp from the passage behind me, amber light on the left page, shadow on the right. Lano sat beside the board's leg and watched the square.
The market was running. Three stalls to my left, a keeper of the place was wrapping cloth around a bundle of dried stalks, her hands quick and certain, the knot pulled tight without looking. She did not look my way. The entry-keeper moved along the row of boards with a clay lamp in one hand, setting it down, lifting it again. I could hear the relay clerk somewhere in the passage, speaking short words, receiving short answers. None of it touched the notebook.
A child crossed the square carrying a pot with both hands. An older man crouched at the far corner, examining something at the base of a post. The square was not waiting for anything. It was already at work.
I stood at the edge of the board and let my hands fall. The notebook lay open. Its pages held what they held. The square held what it held. These were not the same account, and I had stopped trying to make them meet.
Lano's ears turned once, then settled. She pressed her nose to the ground near the board's foot, circled the base, and sat again, facing the center of the square. A vendor rolled a barrel past on loose stones. The sound went across the open ground and came back softer.
The entry-keeper passed close enough that the lamp she carried threw a brief wash of light across the open pages. She did not slow. The light moved over the words, and the words stayed words, and the square stayed the square.
I moved a step closer to the board and looked at what was there: the ink, the small even lines, the page turned by someone's hand at the start of the residency. This was night four. Umbermarket had been named in the record and had not named itself back. That was the condition of the place. Not silence. Something more like the way a kept account stays kept: present and unread, accurate and untested.
The keeper of the place finished the knot, set the bundle down, picked up the next. Lano huffed once through her nose, soft and low, her tail tapping the stone once.
I left the notebook open and walked the full width of the square's edge, staying in the outer ring where the lamplight thinned. When I came back, the pages had not moved. The square was still at work.
