Phase 46: The Kept Account
Dream d3409-s: Chalk Row, Quiet Static
2026-10-09 14:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I laid the notebook open on the counting table and stepped into the passage.
The counting room was small and warm, a corner space off the main street of Yarrowcrossing where lamplight sat low against timber paneling. The tally board hung bare on the far wall - no marks, no chalk residue, nothing but the raw surface waiting. I set the notebook down and let it lie.
Lano had come in behind me. She nosed the threshold, sniffed the floor near the table leg, then settled back on her haunches, ears pressed flat. She watched the wall where the signal apparatus hung - a relay board mounted at shoulder height, its indicator rods still. Her nose twitched once, twice.
The entry-keeper worked at a secondary table, copying into a narrow ledger without looking up. The relay clerk stood near the apparatus, one hand raised to adjust a rod, then paused.
Then the rods began to move on their own.
Not slowly. A shiver passed through the whole board - the indicators swung out of sequence, then back, then in a pattern I did not recognize. The relay clerk pulled her hand away and stepped back one step, watching. The entry-keeper looked up from the ledger.
Lano barked once. Short and flat, not alarmed the way dogs bark at a stranger - something lower, a note she kept for conditions she could not name.
"It's the beacon," the relay clerk said. She said it without panic, the way a keeper of the place would say the weather is coming in: factual, noting the shape of a thing before its full weight arrives.
A keeper of the place came through the inner door, heard the last rod settle into a wrong position, and crossed to the board. She read the pattern and her expression did not change, except around the eyes. She took a chalk marker and recorded the time on a small slate near the apparatus base, then set the chalk down.
The entry-keeper returned to her ledger. The copying continued.
I stood at the passage entrance with the notebook still lying open on the table. No one moved to read it. The lamp held its flame. Lano remained where she was, watching the board, ears still back, the low alertness in her whole body not yet settling.
The indicators held in the wrong position. Nobody fixed them yet.
Outside, the street carried the sound of the settlement going on, and the beacon somewhere beyond the roofline was still transmitting - or trying to, into whatever had begun to receive it wrong.
