Dream d3398-s: Foundations at the Sixth Night

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the bench at the Larkgate arch still held warmth from the afternoon, and I sat with the notebook unopened on my knee while the clerk worked by lantern at the adjacent post, recording the oiled hinges, recording the open spine of the notebook, recording the date in a hand I could not read from where I sat.

Lano was beside me, her nose moving through the cool air in short deliberate passes. The keeper of the gate had come out an hour before to oil the mechanism - I had watched their hands move, heard the slow exhale of iron easing - and then they had gone back without speaking. The notebook had been on the bench when I arrived. I had lifted it once to see if there was a name on the cover. There was not. I set it back on my knee.

The surveyor was working the north edge of the courtyard, drawing lines by the low light, when Lano's head came up. Not toward the surveyor. Toward the old row of structures beyond the inner wall, the ones the settlement had absorbed from the prior network without tearing down. Her ears went flat. She pressed her flank against my shin, still watching that direction.

Then the sound: not loud, not sudden, but sustained - a groan that moved through the paving stones and up through the bench legs and into me. One of the absorbed buildings shifted. A tile fell and broke somewhere I could not see. The surveyor stopped drawing and looked up. The clerk's pen did not stop but their posture changed.

A cable that had been strung between the old administration block and the newer wall - I had noticed it many times, had assumed it carried something the settlement still used - went slack, then fell. The administration block was tilting, not falling, tilting, leaning its old weight against the new wall as if asking permission.

Lano barked once. Not at me. At the direction of it.

The keeper came back through the gate arch, moving quickly without running, and went to find the surveyor. They spoke in low voices I could not hear from the bench. The distant reader appeared at an upper window of the intact hall and watched without coming down.

I did not move from the bench. The notebook was still on my knee. I had not opened it. Nobody had asked me to. The clerk wrote the time in the margin of the record, then wrote something else, then set the pen down beside the inkwell and looked at the tilting block the same way Lano was looking at it.

The arch above the gate held. The lamp at the post held. The bench held. The notebook sat there, waiting to find out who this place said it was for.
