Dream d3379-s: The Iron Asks Nothing

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the bridge came out of the dark as a darker shape against the sky, and the notebook in the pack was cold the way metal is cold when it has been against open air all day.

The wind here comes without warning. It moves across the ground before the approach and hits the shoulders flat. The relay clerk had the count sheet folded in a coat pocket. The surveyor was a few steps ahead where the road narrows toward the first iron pillar. Lano trotted at the path's edge with her nose low, reading the new ground - a smell here she had not catalogued before, iron and river damp and old combustion.

The bridge is old in its proportions, the way the arches press down rather than lift. The river is darker than the bridge and the sky is lighter than both. Lights on the far bank: windows that have been lit before and will be lit again. None of it arranged for the party; the place continuing its own business.

The keeper was at the near end, not blocking, only present. A figure who had stood here through other weathers. The surveyor exchanged a nod. The relay clerk opened the count sheet against the push of air and held it flat. I let the pack settle and said nothing about what it held.

Lano stopped at the first pillar and pressed her nose to the iron. A long breath in. Then she stepped back and shook her ears, as if the smell required no further deliberation. She fell in beside me.

We crossed without ceremony. Midway I felt it: a vibration in the structure below my feet, a weight passing somewhere on the far bank road, the bridge recording it in a frequency too low to name as sound. Lano paused at the same moment and raised her tail. The river moved under the arch.

Then we were across. The distant reader stood at the far edge looking back at where we had come from, measuring something without an instrument. The town went on past her in its lamplight. Lano sat down at the road's edge. The keeper was somewhere behind us, still present in the way a threshold is present when you have passed through it.

The notebook stayed cold against my back. The place did not ask for it. The place did not lean toward it or hold still for it. The wind moved, the lights held, the river ran, and the place went on exactly as it had been going, with or without anyone to record it.
