Phase 45: The Unread Notebook
Dream d3373-s: A Held Breath, Then Nothing
2026-10-06 11:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the gate hung wrong on its lower hinge, and the keeper was already there when I arrived with the notebook under one arm and Lano ahead of me on the lane.
The hinge had seized - rust in the joint, the pin half-lifted from its cradle - and the keeper worked a file along the socket with the patience of someone who has done this in worse weather. The field beyond smelled of wet grass and old stone. Harrowbridge lay at our backs, its rooflines quiet under overcast.
I did not interrupt. The notebook stayed under my arm. I had not yet found who it was for, and there was no reading it here. The keeper had not looked up.
Lano sat at the edge of the lane and let her nose do the work. Then her ears went flat.
A sound came from back toward the settlement - not loud, more like a held breath released wrong: a mill wheel winding down without consent, a flutter of belt and then nothing. The silence left by a sound that was there a moment before carries its own weight.
The keeper set the file down. Listened.
What I understood without being told: the gear housing at the headrace carried a salvaged iron bracket that had been suspect since before the wet season. The smell of hot metal arrived across the field on a thin thread of smoke. The bracket had decided the matter on its own terms, and the system it held had gone dark.
Lano gave one short bark - sharp and low, the sound she makes when something needs attention and no one is giving it. She held her position in the lane but her posture said she was ready to move.
The keeper stood from the hinge. Looked at the mill race, then back at the gate - pin still unseated, work still open. Then walked away from it.
A figure came around the far building without running, which is how people move when they know how bad a thing is and have decided not to make it worse. The surveyor, with a length of heavy cord and an expression that said there was already a plan requiring someone to hold the other end.
The gate stood open. I stayed at the hinge. The notebook did not open.
The keeper went to meet the surveyor. Harrowbridge had woken to a problem it would need to work through. I was not yet part of that - only a witness at the gate, holding the notebook, waiting to see what the place was about to become.
