Dream d3370-s: Twine at the Far Rail

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the hedge row ran along a low slope, branches thick and uncut, last year's growth still wound into this year's. I stood where the row bent, the notebook under my arm, and watched the clerk kneel at the far rail of a fence dividing the field from the path. Lano had gone ahead and come back, and now she sat at the edge of the hedge shadow, nose reading the air.

The clerk had a length of twine. I watched them tie it off at the rail's second post and then open their ledger on the ground, the cover held flat with one hand while the other wrote. The date. The rail. The twine's color, which was brown, almost the same umber as the post wood. They did not look up.

I had carried the notebook from the last place on the road where the gravel changed to packed dirt. Nobody had asked about it. The surveyor had passed me going the other way and nodded and said nothing. The relay clerk had been at the far edge of the field, their back to me. I had not called out.

The keeper of the place stood under the hedge at the row's bend, not watching me exactly, but not not-watching either. Their presence was the kind that belongs to a place the way a stone belongs to a wall: it is not the wall, but without it something shifts.

Lano moved closer to the rail and sat again, ears forward. A small white shape against all the umber and moss of the late afternoon.

The clerk finished writing and pressed the ledger closed and looked at the knot in the twine. Just looked at it for a moment. Then they stood and walked back along the fence line toward the far end of the field without passing me.

I stood there with the notebook. It had the same weight in my arm it had carried all day. Nobody here was the one it was for, or if they were, they had not needed to say so. Garnetbrook was going on: the hedge, the rail, the turned earth of a path that had been walked this season and would be walked again. The twine caught the low light and held it briefly.

Lano pressed against my leg once, then looked out at the field.
