Phase 45: The Unread Notebook
Dream d3357-s: Dry Crossing, Failing Lamp
2026-10-05 09:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the river at Fennbridge was low enough to see the mud lines on its banks, and the crossing stones stood up clean and dry on their flat tops. I carried the notebook under my arm. Lano walked ahead of me onto the first stone, then the second, her white coat pale against the dark water on either side.
The keeper was at the far end of the lane, turning something over in both hands - a small brass fitting, black at one end. The relay post behind stood dark. The signal lamp that should have been burning in its iron bracket was unlit, and the bracket itself carried a smell of scorched wire.
Lano stopped before I reached the bank. Her ears went flat. A single bark, short and certain, and then silence.
The surveyor stood to one side of the post, looking up at the dead lamp without touching it. The relay clerk had the ledger open but was not writing - only watching the keeper work the ruined fitting between both hands. Salvaged from the earlier assembly, the keeper said, to no one in particular. Thought it had another season.
I stood on the last crossing stone and held the notebook at my side. No one asked about it. The distant reader was further along the lane, seated on a low wall, turned toward the settlement rather than toward us. It was not clear if anything was being read there, or if the distant reader was simply watching the lane go on.
The relay post served three settlements in this reach. Without the signal lamp, the handoff sequence that ran after nightfall had no anchor point. The surveyor said something low to the relay clerk. The relay clerk made a mark in the margin, not the ordinary one.
The keeper put the ruined fitting away and looked at the bracket housing. Named two components that might serve. Neither was the right part; both were present in the lane stores somewhere. The voice was steady. Not the first recalibration.
Lano came back to me across the last two stones and pressed against my leg. I rested a hand on her back. She stayed alert, nose toward the unlit post, tail low and still.
The crossing stones were dry at the top. The river ran quiet and small beneath them. The notebook remained closed, its pages pressed tight, and no one at Fennbridge asked what it held or whether it belonged here. The keeper kept working. The surveyor kept watching. The lamp stayed dark.
By the time I reached the bank, the provisional materials were already being laid out on the lane wall - the next step plain, and not yet taken.
