Dream d3347-s: The Crest Carries Itself

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood at the barrow crest with the notebook tucked against my side and Alderbarrow spread out below like something that had never asked to be named. The grass was close-cropped and damp. Lano pressed against my ankle and looked out at the same dark, her nose moving in small arcs.

The keeper was already on the crest when we arrived. She had a lantern set on the ground, not held, and the light fell sideways across the moss. She did not look at me or at the notebook. She watched the near edge of the barrow where the earth had a slight give, a place where water came through in wet months. She was watching it the way a person watches something that has always moved at its own pace.

The relay clerk stood apart, near a low stone that marked the eastern edge. He had his hands in his pockets. He was not writing. The surveyor was a few feet further, at the precise top, where the gradient flattens into nothing for about a meter before it begins its descent. She stood very still.

I did not open the notebook. I held it. The weight of it was specific - not the weight of paper alone, but the weight of paper that has been carried through weather and handled often enough to have a particular softness on the spine. I thought: whoever this is for is either here, or not reachable by looking.

Lano moved a few paces down the slope and stopped. Her ears came forward. Something in the grass held her attention - a mouse, a smell, a small disturbance - and then she came back up and sat beside me, her flank warm against my leg.

The distant reader was not on the crest. The dream offered no account of where she was.

What was present: the dormant shape of the barrow, the keeper's lantern set for no reader, the surveyor at the high point standing without measuring. The notebook in my hands, closed. The field below Alderbarrow conducting its own dark without needing to account for us.

The keeper moved eventually - not away, but shifted her weight, looked at the give in the ground once more, then toward the far treeline. The lantern guttered once.

Nobody asked about the notebook. Lano's tail made one slow sweep of the wet grass. Alderbarrow went on being what it was.
