Phase 45: The Unread Notebook
Dream d3344-s: Light Settled Against the Table
2026-10-04 10:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the reading room at Alderbarrow held a particular stillness, not empty but full of what it had long received.
I laid the notebook open on the bare table - not to any page, just open, the way a window is left unlatched when no one expects weather. Then I went to stand at the window.
The keeper moved along the shelves behind me. I heard her hand trail the row. She did not come near the table. The distant reader sat beneath the south-facing light with something else entirely in her lap, absorbed in a text that had nothing to do with the road. The relay clerk was at the side table, copying from a different source, her nib moving steadily. The surveyor had a length of string wound around one thumb and was not measuring anything.
Lano had settled near the door when we arrived, nose pointed toward the corridor. She watched the keeper the way dogs watch motion that is not threat - with mild interest, without urgency. When the keeper passed close to the table, Lano raised her head briefly, then let it down.
The light outside was amber going toward gray. A tree I did not know the name of moved slightly in no particular wind. Alderbarrow had been like this for four days - present but resting, not waiting to begin, not having ended, simply dormant in the way things can be when they have already witnessed what they needed to witness. Four times someone had come here and recorded what they found. What they found was this: a room that received whatever arrived and did not hold it, did not push it back.
I did not read the notebook. That was not what was being asked of me. What the room seemed to want was simpler - that I stand here with it, that the light fall across the open page, that someone be present who knew it was here.
Lano crossed once to the table, pressed her nose briefly to the corner of the open page, then returned to the door and sat. "Mira," she said softly, to no one, and was still.
The light shifted. I waited until it finished. Nobody took the notebook. The room went on.
