Dream d3340-s: One Account, No Reader Yet

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the smell of cooling ash reached the road before any building did. I had the account folded inside my coat - not mine to open, not yet handed to anyone - and it pressed gently against my ribs, paper-weight only, which felt wrong for something that had traveled this far without being read.

Lano moved ahead of me on the packed earth, white against the dark, pausing where puddles had dried to flat rings. She sniffed each one carefully, nose down, tail low. Whatever Ironfall had set into the ground over these ten nights, she was reading it in her own way.

The keeper stood in the open gate of the yard as I passed. No gesture of summoning. No nod that meant come back. The keeper watched the road the way still water watches the bottom of a cistern - collected, without instruction. I did not slow down.

Behind the gate, a lamp had been set in a window I had not noticed on the first night. I did not know if it was new or if I had simply failed to see it. Ironfall offered no explanation. It rarely had.

The surveyor had marked the edge of the settlement with a small chalk cross on a roadside stone, faded now to gray, almost invisible unless you knew to look at that angle. I looked. It was still there. Eight visits recorded. The condition noted as dormant. The chalk had not been renewed. Whatever dormancy meant here, it did not mean renewal.

Lano circled back once, stood beside me for a moment - her breath a small white cloud - then went forward again, east, ahead of any lamp's reach.

The account in my pocket was addressed in a hand I recognized and had not opened. I did not know who it was for. The relay clerk had passed it at the edge of town with nothing said except that it had arrived while the town was not watching. I had carried it through the last night and morning of the residency without breaking the seal. Now I was carrying it down the road with no destination yet.

The last thing I could see, looking back, was the iron bracket on the long shed wall. It held nothing now. On the sixth night it had held a lantern. By the seventh, the lantern was gone. The bracket had remained through all of it - the visits, the dormancy, the slow retreat of chalk from stone.

Lano was a white shape far ahead. The bracket was a dark one, small, going still.

The road went east. I carried what I carried.
