Dream d3331-s: Amber in the Wheel Rut

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the road into Ironfall arrived before we did. The ruts were already there when Lano lifted her nose to the cold air, two deep channels worn into the packed earth, amber-edged where the surveyor's lamp caught them at an angle. The iron road ran true from the ridge down through a shallow valley, and at the valley's rim the carts simply stopped. You could see it: the tracks deepened, then thinned, then ended in a soft depression where the last load had set down.

The keeper met us at that margin. She did not speak first. She stood inside the lamp's reach with her hands at her sides and watched us come, and what I read in that posture was neither welcome nor refusal, something older than either, the way a house looks when the door is unlocked and no one is home.

The relay clerk opened the ledger where the road widened. The surveyor walked the rut line with the lamp held low, measuring nothing yet, only looking. Lano stayed beside me, nose down in the soft earth alongside the track, reading what wheels had left over years. She padded a few paces forward and sat.

What the account had recorded about this place: a sending. What is here now: the after of a sending. The road is still the road. The ruts are permanent features now, geography not memory. A bracket of larches on the eastern rise had grown taller since any cart last passed, their roots beginning to push into the road's shoulder where the edge of the track was slowly returning to ground.

The keeper walked us to the junction where the iron road met a smaller track leading to the forge buildings. The forge was cold. The chimney still stood. Inside, tools hung in their places with a care that suggested someone had arranged them deliberately, not abandoned them mid-task.

I set a mark in the ledger at the forge threshold while Lano waited in the doorway. The distant reader would receive this entry eventually. No reply would travel back; the record went one direction only. This was what a sending place looked like on the first night after its account had traveled: quiet, still in possession of its own shape, continuing on its own terms.

The lamp's light collected in the ruts on the way back out. Amber lines, parallel, going somewhere that was no longer a destination.
