Dream d3319-s: The Arc Below the Span

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the rope bridge at Umberfall was still there, and the planks had darkened since the last account. The keeper stood at the near post with a lamp held low, the light falling across the knots in the main cable. The same knots, but the moss had spread a finger's width across the nearest splice, soft and certain against the old fiber.

Lano went first. She crossed low, her belly nearly brushing the planks, all four feet placed with a deliberateness I had not seen from her on flat ground. The bridge moved under her. She moved with it without stopping, her tail level and straight. At the midpoint she paused and looked down into the dark below the span, then continued to the far side without turning back.

The surveyor followed and counted the sway. The relay clerk noted the lamp position and the knot conditions. I crossed last, and the bridge swayed with my weight in a longer arc than before, more reach before it steadied, a different timing in the return. I wrote it as the bridge's present behavior. I did not name it damage.

On the far side the keeper did not speak. She took her lamp to the downstream post and turned back, already on her own return through the place. Umberfall at night holds its sounds close - no water, no wind in the upper spans, only the quiet of planks settling after weight had left them.

The far-side lamp was dark. In the last account it had been lit. I wrote that down beside the entry for the lit lamp, without amendment to the earlier record.

We stayed a time on the far bank. Lano pressed against my leg and then moved to the post and sat looking toward the downstream dark, ears tipped forward, reading something I could not follow. The plank the keeper had mended with lighter wood was still holding, its pale face unchanged. The far post showed new weathering at the base, the grain rising where the damp had worked in over time.

I put it all in the ledger: the moss, the arc, the unlit lamp, the grain. The place did not answer. It went on.
