Dream d3305-s: What the Notice Names

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the drying line ran between two posts at the edge of the courtyard, and the printed notice hung from a wooden peg, its corners lifting slightly in the night air. I had been here before. The walls held the same quiet they had held when I last recorded this place, though the season had changed beneath them.

The keeper stood near the line without touching it, watching the paper lose the last of its ink-wet. The notice gave one date. That was all it offered: the day the harvest would begin, set in type, no explanation on either side of it. The clerk had already folded the record and sent it. The relay was done. What had traveled from here had traveled; what would be read had been read somewhere I could not see.

Lano moved ahead of me along the courtyard stones, her nose low, following a trail I could not name. She stopped at the far post of the drying line and looked up at the notice without barking. Her ears settled.

Smoke lifted from a chimney at the far end of the building, and the lamp in the window made the courtyard amber on the near side, shadow-dark on the other. The surveyor had set their tools against the wall and was not measuring anything. The notice swayed once, then stopped.

I stood at a distance that felt correct, which is to say I did not approach the line. The keeper did not speak. The notice dried in the night air and the date it carried became legible to no one present; it was already on its way to whoever needed it. The place had the quality of a room after a letter is sent: the same objects, the same dimensions, but the weight distributed differently now.

Lano circled once on the stones and lay down facing the notice, her chin on her forepaws. I did not call her back. The smoke thinned. The lamp held.

The harvest date meant what it meant, and this was a place that had given that information over. It would go on without knowing what was done with it.
