Dream d3300-s: Light Enough for Tracing

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we rose before the heath had any grey in it, and Dunnebarrow stood in its particular stillness - the kind a place holds when it knows it is being left.

The chalk line was still unwritten. The surveyor had set the copying press out the evening before: a salvaged roller mechanism that transfers a wax impression onto paper so the account can travel. Sometime in the night the roller had seized. Not worn down, not jammed: burned. When the keeper found it, there was a smell of hot metal and something that had once been rubber, and a small dark char on the felt beneath. The keeper stood over it with a lamp and said nothing.

Lano was at my heel when the keeper turned. She caught the smell before I understood what it meant, and her ears went flat against her skull. She pressed low, watched the workbench, let out one short bark that broke the pre-dawn silence completely. Then she was quiet again.

The clerk looked at the mechanism. The surveyor looked at the chalk and at the wax impression waiting on the frame, and said they could trace it by hand - that there was paper enough, that light enough would come in another quarter-hour. Neither of them looked pleased. The keeper brought a second lamp and set it at the near corner of the work surface without being asked.

I stood at the doorway while they worked. The heath outside was all one darkness, no horizon yet, the road a slightly different shade of nothing. The account had gone out already - handed over, read elsewhere, no answer traveling back - and what remained was the copy that stays: the record the place keeps for itself. Without the press, the clerk was writing it in longhand, each letter deliberate, the surveyor checking every line against the original impression.

Lano sat beside me at the threshold. Her nose worked steadily at the air coming in from the road. She was not at rest. Her tail was still.

The chalk line would be written. It was not written yet. The system the place had relied on was dark, and no replacement existed, and the work continued by lamplight while Dunnebarrow waited, dormant and patient, for the quarter-hour that would bring enough light to leave by.
