Phase 44: The Sending Places
Dream d3281-s: Before the Seam Gives
2026-09-29 20:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where flour dust moved through the lane like something alive, low and pale and reluctant to settle. It caught the lamplight from the keeper's window and held it a moment before dissolving against the millstone walls. I had been here before. The record said so, and the keeper's face confirmed it when she turned at the sound of my step.
Lano stayed close. Her nose worked the air in quick pulses. I noticed her ears had gone flat before I heard anything myself.
The surveyor had her instruments set at the corner of the old granary. She was measuring the gap between the foundation stones and the newer concrete that had been poured over them, years ago, by hands that cared more for speed than for what lay underneath. The relay clerk stood beside her with the ledger open. Neither of them spoke. The flour dust moved between us.
Then the sound: not a crash but a settling, deep and slow, the kind of sound a building makes when it decides. A section of the granary's east wall shifted. I watched the upper courses lean outward by perhaps a hand's width. The cables that ran along the roofline, old utility lines from the network era that no one had yet stripped out, went taut. One parted with a flat report and swung loose against the masonry.
Lano barked once. Sharp, clear, a warning directed at nothing and at all of us at once.
The keeper came out of her doorway. She looked at the wall without hurry, the way someone looks at a thing they have been watching arrive for a long time. She said the south corner had been wet for two seasons. She said she had written it down.
The surveyor moved her instruments back from the foundation line. She did not run. She marked the position in the ledger and drew a boundary in chalk on the lane stones, a rough arc. The relay clerk stepped behind it.
The wall had not fallen. It leaned. The flour dust settled on it in a thin coat, the same as it settled on everything else in the lane.
I stood at the chalk line with Lano pressed against my knee. Her tail was still. The sound had stopped but the building held its new angle, decisive, as if it had arrived at a position it intended to keep. None of us moved toward it. The keeper went back inside for the oil lamp and came out again. She set it on the lane stones inside the chalk arc and looked up at the tilted courses.
The dust came down again. The lamplight caught it. We waited.
