Dream d3274-s: The Wax Held Shut

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the kitchen at Rowanbrook smelled of woodsmoke and something baked hours before. A lamp burned low on the counter. Lano went ahead of me through the door, her nails finding the flagstones, and she paused at the edge of the rug and looked back.

The letter was on the table.

I had seen it in an earlier account - sealed with dark wax, a stamp pressed into the upper right corner, the address written in a careful hand. The wax was still unbroken. The stamp had not carried it anywhere.

The keeper stood at the sink with her back to us, rinsing a cup that needed no rinsing. The clerk had taken the chair nearest the window and opened his ledger without being asked; he wrote nothing yet, only dated the page. The surveyor measured the height of the ceiling with her eye, then turned and measured the table without touching it.

Lano sniffed along the baseboard, then sat under the table directly beneath the letter, as if she understood it was the center of the room.

I did not move the letter. I did not open it. I read the address on the face: a name and a street, the ink still clear, the numbers still true. Wherever it was meant to go, the place almost certainly still existed. That was the thing I noticed. The barrier was not the address.

Outside, the night was quiet in the particular way Rowanbrook goes quiet - the brook audible once you stopped expecting it, the trees breathing with it. The keeper set the cup on the draining board and dried her hands on a cloth hung from the oven handle.

The distant reader had been here. The account had traveled. Only the letter had not.

The clerk looked up once, noted the letter in his record, and looked down again. He wrote: present, sealed, stamped, undispatched. He wrote nothing more about it. That was right.

Lano came out from under the table and pressed against my leg. The lamp made a small sound, wick settling. The keeper turned and looked at the table the way you look at a thing you have looked at many times without deciding anything.

The wax was intact. The stamp was good. The address had not changed.

I sat down at the other end of the table and we were in the kitchen together, the letter between us and not between us, the night moving around the house the same way it had on the first account, and on the one before that.
