Phase 44: The Sending Places
Dream d3264-s: The Lamp Holds, Barely
2026-09-28 16:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I came back to Quillbridge on the fourth night of ten, and the reading room was exactly as I had left it: the long table, the low lamp, the smell of binding glue and old wool. The distant reader was already seated at the far end, a new page open before them, and they did not look up when I came through the door.
The account had been sent. That was finished. What remained was this: the room going on.
I took the chair nearest the window and laid the survey record flat. The keeper had set a candle at each end of the shelf row. Three visits were noted in the margin, including this one now. I added the date in the narrow column, pressed the ink dry with my thumb.
Lano had followed me in. She paused just inside the threshold, ears gone flat, nose lifted. A sound reached us before the wind did - a low moan from somewhere above the roofline, a mast or a cable singing under strain. Then the rain came sideways against the glass.
The lamp dimmed. Did not go out.
The clerk stood from the side table and moved to the east window without being asked. Outside, the antenna lines were still, but barely - the guy-wires were thrumming. Water was already running along the trench edge below the sill, finding the seam between the flagstone and the packed earth.
The surveyor came in from the passage with mud on his boots and rain darkening his shoulders. He said nothing. He went to the ledger rack, checked that the cabinet was sealed, put a weight on the map roll. Competence without ceremony.
Lano pressed against my leg and gave one short bark - not at anyone, at the dark behind the glass. Her tail was low. I put my hand briefly on her head and she stayed quiet, watching.
The generator, somewhere under the floor, gave a single thud and caught again.
The distant reader did not look up. Whatever page they were on, they remained on it. The lamp recovered its steadiness. The room held the sound of rain against stone and the faint mechanical rhythm from below, and underneath that, the silence of a place that had sent its account out into the world and was now simply continuing.
I noted in the margin: fourth visit, returning party, storm onset, infrastructure tested - generator active, cable trench flooding, masts under load. Condition at time of entry: dormant, now alert.
The candles at the shelf ends held. The keeper came to the door, looked in, and did not enter. The record remained open on the table before me, witness to nothing more than what was here.
