Phase 44: The Sending Places
Dream d3255-s: The Shape the Ledger Left
2026-09-28 00:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the shelf ran the length of the east wall at Fenncrossing, and the lamp at the near end had been burning long enough to darken the stone above it. The keeper stood at the middle of the shelf, not looking at me when I entered, running a finger along the spines.
The moved ledger was visible immediately. One hand-width of clear air between it and its neighbors on the right, and on the shelf beneath it, the dust lay in a pale rectangle where it had pressed for some duration before this. The keeper did not point to it. I did not ask.
Lano came in behind me and went directly to the base of the shelf, her nose along the floor, reading something in the grain of the old wood. Her tail moved once, then settled.
The clerk had spread a fresh sheet on the table near the window. The table itself was the same - one leg shimmed with a folded cloth, the surface darkened at the near left corner from long use. The sheet was new, the ink stone uncapped. Outside the window the same courtyard held the same three stones, and the water in the basin between them had not moved in the cold.
I looked at the dust rectangle again. It was precise at two edges and less precise at the others, suggesting the ledger had been removed and returned more than once over years, always landing close but not exactly. This removal had been exact. Someone knew the shape of the thing.
The keeper turned a page in the ledger now in their hands - not the moved one, a different one, taller and thinner - and did not read aloud. Lano sat below the shelf and looked up, ears forward, at something above the reach of her nose.
The surveyor came in from the side door and set a carrying case on the floor without opening it. He looked at the shelf. He looked at the dust rectangle. He did not say anything about it.
The clerk dipped the pen and wrote a date at the top of the fresh sheet.
Outside, someone crossed the courtyard without stopping.
The lamp continued. The dust held the pale shape of what had been. Lano padded to the window and sat in the low light from the courtyard, her breath making a small fog on the cold glass, then clearing, then making it again.
