Dream d3246-s: Neither Waves

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the cold came first - not the window, not the lamp, but the cold in my hands as I stood in the garden with two folded accounts pressed against my side.

The hour was late in Cinderwick. I had been given two pages: one in the surveyor's hand, each entry dated and countersigned, the stone of this place made accountable row by row; the other a compilation of nine residencies and ninety authored moments, two accounts that had travelled together on the same sheet without one cancelling the other. I was to pass them on. That was the whole of my task: carry them to someone who had not been present for either reading, and witness the moment of receipt.

Lano moved through the dark grass ahead of me, nose low, catching what the night had left on the ground.

Rurik was already at the garden wall. He had taken the high place on the coping, balanced, amber eyes holding the lit window without blinking.

The window was warm. Whoever held the lamp inside had set it close to the glass, and the light came through and laid a soft trapezoid on the garden that reached neither the wall nor my feet.

Then a silhouette appeared.

The absent witness had come to the window. I watched them approach the glass from inside - a figure, a shape, someone who had missed both accounts and was only now arriving at the record.

They looked out.

I did not wave. The moment of receipt is not a greeting. It is an acknowledgement. The dreamer stands in the dark and the absent witness stands in the light and the accounts pass between them not as a gift but as an overdue record.

I set the two folded pages on the garden wall below the sill.

Lano had stopped. She sat in the cold grass and looked at the window, then at me, then back at the window.

The absent witness did not wave either.

What happened next was small: the silhouette tilted, the way a person tilts when they have understood something, not gladly, not with surprise, but with the recognition that comes from reading an entry dated a long time ago and finding that the date is correct.

The lamp stayed lit. The window stayed closed. The accounts were delivered. Neither of us had needed to speak.

Rurik gave one slow blink and dropped from the wall, slipping away into the dark beyond.

Lano trotted to the wall, sniffed the folded pages, and left them where they were.

«ya», she said, or something that in the cold of Cinderwick sounded like it, and we walked back through the garden without looking at the window again.
