Phase 43: The Absent Witness
Dream d3237-s: The Tilt Begins Below
2026-09-26 17:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I stood on the exposed summit ridge above Galehollow, the parcel of two accounts pressed flat against my chest, the wind coming in hard and low off the outer slope. The record was wrapped in oilcloth - the relay clerk's choice, not mine, handed over at the lower gate with both hands and no commentary. Lano walked behind my legs, her white fur pressed flat along her back, nose low, reading something the wind was carrying up from the settlement below.
I was to bring the record to the absent witness. Not to explain it. Not to read from it. Only to place it in their hands and remain while they received it.
The descent cut through the old terrace line - foundations from before the reckoning, before any named place had been entered in the atlas, before the surveyor had signed a single entry. Lano's ears went flat. She stopped.
A sound came up from the lower quarter: not loud, not sudden, but sustained - the sound a structure makes when something it has been leaning against for decades finally shifts. I looked down toward the settlement's innermost tier and watched the roofline of the relay house change. Slowly. A degree, perhaps two. A cable strung between the relay tower and the eastern cistern went slack, then snapped back at an angle that meant the cistern had moved.
The relay clerk was already running. Figures gathered at the edge of the damaged quarter - none of them panicking, all of them looking at each other with the particular attention of people who are assessing.
Lano barked once. Sharp, low, directed down the slope. Then she trotted ahead of me, ears still flat, body close to the ground. I followed her.
By the time I reached the settlement gate the building had tilted another degree. One of the old foundations - pre-settlement work, adapted rather than replaced, part of what the corrupt network had left behind in the earth - had given along a seam. The ground around it showed the fresh edge of the failure: pale earth where floor had been, cables splayed like broken ribs across the rubble.
At the threshold of the records chamber I stopped. Lano sat beside me.
The absent witness was there, seated, and looked up.
I set the parcel on the table between us. Neither of us spoke for a moment. The two accounts were inside it, dated and signed, having traveled together without erasing each other. They were not mine to explain. I had carried them down from the summit. That was the whole of my part.
Below, in the inner quarter, voices were calling out counts and findings. The work of assessment had begun. How far the foundation had shifted, how much of the old infrastructure had gone with it, whether the cable could be re-run before morning - none of that was visible from here.
Only that the structure had moved. And that the moving was not done.
