Phase 43: The Absent Witness
Dream d3235-s: The Lamp Makes No Ceremony
2026-09-26 14:08 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the harbourmaster's office sat at the end of a long stone corridor, and the lamp on the desk was the only light burning in the whole of Reedhaven's administrative quarter. I had come with the record - two accounts bundled together, one dated from the first reading of stones, one from the nine residencies and their intervals - and I carried them the way a relay clerk carries something that does not belong to them, with both hands and no claim.
Rurik had gone ahead. He sat in the doorway of the office and refused to move for a long moment, amber eyes steady on the room inside, before he slipped through and took the warm spot under the filing cabinet. Lano trotted at my heel, and when I stopped at the threshold she sat beside me, nose twitching at the smell of salt and old paper.
The harbourmaster was already at the desk when I entered. The account I carried had a wax seal on the cover - a plain one, no device, just the impression of a round ring pressed twice for certainty. I set it on the surface before the harbourmaster without speaking. The harbourmaster's hands moved to it at once, lifting it, turning it in the lamplight, examining the seal from one angle then another. Lano watched from beside the door.
The seal was unbroken.
I had not opened it. The distant reader for whom it was intended had not been present for either account - had not stood in the corridor of unreckoned stone and heard each piece dated aloud, had not sat through the nine residencies and witnessed two dated accounts travel together without collision. The seal meant what it was meant to mean: that the record had arrived as it left.
The harbourmaster set it down, drew the cover sheet from beneath it, and initialed the box marked Received Without Amendment. The hand moved across the page with no hesitation and no ceremony. The harbourmaster did not look up.
I stepped back. Rurik blinked once from under the cabinet, slow. Lano's ears had settled flat in the warmth of the room, and she let out a single breath that was not quite a sigh but was close to one.
The absent witness would collect it in the morning, or would not - that was not mine to determine. The relay clerk's work ended at the desk. What happened next was the business of the office and the record and the one who had been away for both readings.
I watched the harbourmaster's lamp for a moment longer. The flame did not move.
