Dream d3222-s: Garbled At The Fence

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the relay clerk was waiting at the wooden rail fence at the edge of the eastern field when the first distortion came through. The dreamer heard it as a kind of pressure in the air, a moment where the familiar rhythm of the beacon's pulse stuttered and folded back on itself. The relay clerk set the wrapped parcel on the top rail and looked east toward the signal tower.

Lano's ears went flat. She had been sitting in the grass at the dreamer's heel, but she was on her feet now, a low sound in her throat, not quite a bark yet, more a held warning. Her nose worked the air. The dreamer watched the relay clerk's hands go still.

The absent witness came along the fence line from the far side, walking steady. A fresh carrier, newly assigned to Ashholt's outer circuit. The relay clerk made the introduction in the official form: the record of Phase 41, forty-three entries, each dated and signed by the surveyor; the record of Phase 42, nine residencies, ninety authored moments, two dated accounts traveling in parallel without either erasing the other.

The absent witness listened. They had not been present for either reading. The dreamer watched their face absorb this without interpretation, without summary - just the shape of what had been done.

The transfer took one minute. The parcel crossed the rail.

Then the beacon pulse went wrong again, longer, a scramble that held for three full counts. The relay clerk turned fully toward the tower. Across Ashholt, at the second relay station, a lamp signal that should have been steady began to flicker in a pattern the dreamer did not recognize.

Lano barked. Sharp and certain, once.

The absent witness tucked the parcel under their arm. The relay clerk was already pulling out the notation slate, marking the time of the first distortion, the duration, the second pulse. Someone would need to carry word to the oversight post before the night thickened.

The dreamer stood at the fence with the others, all of them listening. The beacon tried again. The encoding came through twisted, a familiar cadence wearing a wrong shape.

The absent witness nodded once.

What that nod meant exactly - acknowledgment of the record, acknowledgment of the distortion, acknowledgment that something had begun - the dreamer could not say.

Rurik appeared from the grass at the field's edge without ceremony. He sat at the base of the fence post and stared toward the signal tower, ears pricked, tail still.

The dreamer waited with the others. The beacon sent another pulse. It arrived garbled.
