Phase 43: The Absent Witness
Dream d3210-s: A Frequency No One Knows
2026-09-24 19:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where Lano leaped the stile before I reached it, landed in the long grass on the far side, and sat. Her ears were already flat by the time I got my boot on the second bar.
I climbed over slowly, the parcel from the relay clerk riding high on my back - two folded accounts inside, bound with a paper strip, addressed to the absent witness in the eastern quarter. I had carried them from the archive room without reading them. That was the instruction. The dreamer does not interpret. The dreamer relays.
Sorrelgate was quiet in the way it gets on the fourth night: the menders off the scaffolding, the surveyor's lamp dark behind the counting window. I came down the field path toward the relay post at the old wool-shed corner, where the absent witness keeps a receiving box under a slate overhang.
I was almost there when the signal came.
It came through the shed's mounted receiver - the copper-wire apparatus the relay clerk had fitted last season to carry the beacon network's timing pulses. Not a voice. Not a code any of us had filed under a name. A pattern of intervals, short-short-long, repeating, that matched nothing in the index the surveyor pinned to the post last winter.
The relay clerk was already at the shed door. She had a candle in one fist and a pencil in the other, head tilted, counting under her breath.
Lano was on her feet. The low warning bark came once - the short one that means she has found something and does not know what it is. Her nose worked the air toward the receiver, then swung east, then swung east again as if the source were out past the unentered places, past the cold forty, somewhere the atlas had not walked.
Rurik appeared from the gap beneath the shed wall, sat himself on the threshold, and stared into the dark between the posts. His tail moved once and stopped.
The relay clerk wrote the interval down. Short-short-long. Short-short-long. Origin unclear. She looked at me. I looked at the parcel on my back, still sealed, still addressed to someone who had been absent for both readings and did not yet know either account existed.
We did not decide, that night, whether to follow the signal or set it aside. The settlement does not move on a pattern it cannot name. The relay clerk would take it to the surveyor in the morning. The surveyor would bring it before the distant reader, who keeps the reference logs.
I set the parcel in the receiving box and pressed the slate flat over it.
Lano sat at my heel. She did not bark again. She watched the east, ears forward now, reading something in the air that I could not measure.
The signal repeated twice more while we stood there, then went quiet.
What the silence meant, no one had yet said.
