Dream d3205-s: The Lantern, Not Yet Lit

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the chandlery in Palewick smelled of tallow and clean wax, and Lano sat at the door with her nose pointed toward the canal, ears up, watching the water the way she does when she knows someone is arriving.

The relay clerk sorted wicks behind the counter, setting them in a flat tray by length. I asked for a lantern - brass fittings, a wide well, a chimney built for wind. He wrapped the wire bail in cloth so it would not bite the hand, and then he trimmed the wick himself, measuring with his thumbnail before the cut. He set the lantern on the counter and did not light it.

The absent witness had come that morning on the late barge. She had not been in Palewick for the stone readings. She had not been present for the nine residencies, the ninety authored moments. What she knew of this place was what had crossed water to reach her, and what crossed water arrives without its weather.

I set the two accounts on the counter beside the lantern. The surveyor's dated pages from the first reading - each stone faithfully entered, each threshold signed. And the second account, the intervals, the two hands traveling together without either erasing the other. I did not explain them. I did not decide which stone mattered more, or what the intervals had proved.

She read. Rurik had taken the warm shelf above the lintel, paws tucked, amber eyes half-closed on the middle distance. Lano's tail moved once, slow.

The lantern stood between us, wick trimmed, well filled, ready for dark. I witnessed the moment she turned the last page. That was the relay. Not what it meant. What it was.
