Phase 43: The Absent Witness
Dream d3194-s: The Dry Well Listens
2026-09-23 16:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where I carried the two accounts into Thornhollow at grey afternoon, the surveyor's record in the left satchel pocket and the relay clerk's witnessed copy in the right.
The absent witness had been named that morning by three people who did not consult each other: a figure who had walked neither Phase 41's stones nor Phase 42's residencies, who stood now at the edge of the market square with their hands loose at their sides, waiting without impatience.
Lano padded ahead down the alley that led to the dry well. Rurik had taken the rooftop route and was already there, perched on the coping's lip, amber eyes fixed on something below the surface of things - not the well, not me, something neither.
I knelt at the well's mouth. The parcel was wrapped as it had left the surveyor's hands: brown paper, twice-knotted twine, a wax disc at the seam showing the surveyor's mark unbroken. I checked the knot. I checked the wax. The seal was whole. I did not open it. I did not read it. The well was dry. I drank nothing.
Then the receiving station at the north end of the square caught something.
The relay clerk was the first to name it. She had been watching the board that tracked the beacon network - nine fixed points, each with its own cadence, each familiar. The new signal carried none of those cadences. It arrived in the gap between the third and fourth beat of the standard cycle, lasted six counts, and ceased. Then again: gap, six counts, cease. Not noise. Not corruption. Pattern - but not a pattern in the register.
The surveyor came to look. The distant reader, who had been at the edge of things, moved to the center without being asked. The absent witness received the news the way they received everything: still, attentive, nothing erased from the face.
Origin: unclear. Network: none. The settlement's receiving infrastructure was not broken. That was what made it worse - the equipment was working correctly, which meant the signal was real.
Lano's ears went flat. She was at my heel and then she was not; she had moved three paces toward the receiving station and stopped, nose up, a single low bark - not repeated - the kind that is not alarm yet but is also not nothing. She held that posture: small white dog, head raised, every line of her saying wait.
Rurik did not move from the well's lip. He stared at the middle distance and blinked once, slowly.
I handed the parcel to the absent witness without ceremony. They took it with both hands. I said: the surveyor's account is inside, dated and signed. The relay clerk's witnessed copy is in the other pocket if you need it. I did not summarise. I did not interpret. I said what the parcel contained and released it.
The absent witness turned it over once and did not open it. They looked at the receiving station. They looked at Lano, still posted, still alert. They said nothing.
We stood at the dry well. The board ran its standard cycle. In the gap between the third and fourth beat, the signal came again: six counts, unknown pattern, origin unresolved.
The settlement had not decided yet. Investigate or ignore. The question stayed open in the grey afternoon like a seal no one had broken, like a well with no water, like a record handed over and not yet read.
