Dream d3172-s: Chalk Above the Waterline

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the threshold was half under. The water had come in slowly enough to leave its own record - a tideline of pale sediment on the doorframe, and above it, older, a chalk mark drawn by a hand that had known the room dry. The Bedrock-Reader crouched at the flood's edge and ran a finger along the seam where dressed stone met the undressed course below, not touching the chalk, only reading what lay beneath it.

The Tally-Reader stood back with her notebook open. Two marks, she said quietly - the chalk above, and below it the new band of clean stone, which was clean in the way flood-scoured surfaces are clean: not restored, just stripped.

Rurik slipped through the gap at the side of the doorframe where the mortar had given way. His black shape disappeared for a moment before his amber eyes caught the light from the opening. He settled in the dry strip between the chalk mark and the water, and stared ahead.

The Anomaly-Hand moved along the wall with her instruments close to the stone but not yet touching. At the corner where the clean band met the original course, she stopped. A faint emission at the seam - pale cyan, barely distinguishable from mineral deposit. She noted its extent without comment.

Lano moved along the flooded margin, her paws in the shallow water, nose low. She took a small stone from the dry strip, carried it in her mouth to where the chalk mark was legible, and let it fall. She looked up once. Mira, she said, and nothing more.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum had not moved toward the seam or the old chalk mark. He stood at the far wall with his notebook closed, looking at an iron armature that rose from the flooded floor at an angle I could not account for. He did not write anything down.

The Horizon-Surveyor was already outside, measuring where the Fennmoss survey ended and the margin began. Her voice came in through the opening - a number, low and clear. The Tally-Reader wrote it down.

The Relic-Watcher had taken a position close to the chalk mark. She did not touch it. She described its height above the clean stone band, the quality of its arc, the faint doubling that suggested it had been traced twice from the same hand. She recorded these things without asking what they meant.

I stood in the dry strip between the old mark and the flood and looked at both. The interval was small enough to span with an open hand. I did not reach.
