Dream d3169-s: The Gap Holds the Hour

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we came to the ditch crossing at the second light.

The morning had shifted since we last passed this way. The sky ran from pale quartz to something heavier, and the ditch lay beneath it exactly as it had before - the same width, the same clay lip, the same cut angle that had been here when the ground was surveyed and marked. The Tally-Reader paused at the edge and looked the length of it without speaking.

Lano went ahead of us. She dropped from the bank in one low step, crossed the wet floor of the ditch, and scrambled up the far side, her white coat darkened at the feet. She turned and watched us from the opposite lip, nose working.

Rurik did not take the same line. He moved upstream of the crossing, found where the clay narrowed to a seam, and crossed there without getting his feet wet, then settled on a raised root and watched the Bedrock-Reader descend.

The Bedrock-Reader knelt in the mud and pressed both palms flat against the exposed section. The strata were visible here - a grey band, then a rust band, then something darker below that gave nothing back. The Anomaly-Hand came down beside them and I watched her mark the pale cyan line with a chalk ring, leaning close, not touching it. The emission had been faint when we arrived; it had not brightened by the time she straightened.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum stood at the edge of the ditch and looked in without descending. There was a length of iron half-visible in the cut wall - a bar, curved at one end, embedded for longer than the survey records reached. It had not moved. The Warden said nothing. That is what the Warden does.

The Horizon-Surveyor crossed to the far bank and turned south. The sheet ends somewhere past the treeline, where the measured edge drops into uncharted land. They stood where the light came flattest and held a mark against the middle distance.

The Relic-Watcher recorded the crossing post - an iron armature, pitted, leaning three degrees from vertical. No names. No explanations. Just the lean and the pitting and the height.

The Tally-Reader set the count at the post: not rounded.

I climbed out last. Lano was waiting on the far side with a smooth stone in her mouth, the pale kind from the ditch floor. She dropped it when I reached her. I placed it beside the armature post and we stood there, the party reassembling on the warm side of the crossing, the gap behind us holding exactly the shape it had held all morning through the shifting light.
