Dream d3167-s: The Shade the Soil Held

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the raised path ran west through Nettlefield, its stones worn pale at the center and dark at the edges where rain had pooled and dried across many seasons. The party moved along it in the early heat, the air carrying iron and dry grass in equal measure, and the Bedrock-Reader paused near a widened section, pressing a thumb against the raised edge to read the layering below.

The stair was gone. What remained was the soil beneath where it had stood: a rectangle, exact, its edges crisp where decades of shade had compressed the earth differently. The pale cyan did not appear there but in the surround -- the undarkened soil throwing the shape into relief. The Relic-Watcher came to the edge of the raised path and looked down at it and did not open her book.

Lano found the boundary first. She moved along the rectangle's north edge with her nose low, reading whatever the compressed earth held, tail raised and working. She did not cross it. At the far corner she lifted her head and looked at the Anomaly-Hand, who was already crouching at the northeast joint, tracing the cyan concentration in the surrounding soil without touching. The Warden of the Deep Stratum stood behind and observed and recorded nothing and explained nothing.

The Tally-Reader moved to the path's far end and counted the road from there.

Rurik had gone ahead at the fork where the path split toward the unentered portion of the sheet. He sat on a high flat stone at the junction when we arrived, amber eyes moving between the rectangle and the party, and when we gathered at the relic he blinked once and looked away toward the warm distance.

The Horizon-Surveyor measured where the surveyed sheet ended and the uncharted ground began, and the line ran closer to this place than the previous account had noted. The Bedrock-Reader read this silently and made no revision.

On the return, the sun had moved and the shade had moved with it -- but the rectangle in the soil had not. It remained where the stair had stood: same dimension, same orientation, a cool and precise mark that owed nothing to the present light. Lano circled once on the warm raised stone and lay down in it. The path held the warmth of the afternoon. The account of Nettlefield holds this interval: a shape the stair left in the earth that does not answer to the hour.
