Dream d3162-s: The Cord's Edge at Nettlefield

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the stile stood at the field's far margin, weathered plank and rusted pin, and the Tally-Reader's count reached it before I did. Lano had gone ahead, nose low in the damp grass, and she lifted her head when the pale cyan seam showed at the base of the first post - ears perked, tail low, watching something I could not yet see.

The Bedrock-Reader crouched and pressed a palm flat to the stone beneath the stile's footer. Cold, she said. Not the cold of shade. The cold of depth.

We crossed in order. The Horizon-Surveyor went last, measuring the angle of the field's far edge against what the cord had already fixed. The cord was staked seventeen paces back, and what lay inside it was accounted for: every furrow, every flat stone, every old mark. What lay beyond the stile, where the grass grew rank and unpressed, she left without a mark. The Anomaly-Hand had noted the pale emissions running in a seam along the field's eastern margin, and she closed her notebook when we crossed. Those seams were outside the cord now.

Rurik had slipped through the lower gap in the stile before any of us set a foot on the first plank. He was already perched on the old land-boundary post when I came down the other side, watching the untouched patch with slow amber eyes. He did not blink for a long time.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum stood at the edge of the patch and noted in her register that it was warm. Not the warmth of sunlit stone. She wrote a single line and closed the cover.

Lano had found something at the patch's near edge - a flat round stone, pale as cream. She sniffed it from all angles, circled once, and sat. Not retrieving it. Just sitting beside it, ears forward.

I knelt and looked at the stone without touching it. There was a faint groove along one face, worn smooth by something older than the cord's reach. The Relic-Watcher recorded the groove's bearing and depth and named nothing.

The field behind us held everything the cord enclosed. The field before us held the untouched patch, the seam's far end, the stone Lano kept company beside. The Tally-Reader counted the steps from stile to patch: eleven. She wrote eleven. She did not round it.

Lano lifted her muzzle toward the open sky, and from her throat came one quiet syllable: ya.

Rurik watched her from the post, then washed a paw with deliberate slowness, and turned to face the untouched grass.
