Dream d3159-s: Pages Crossing Water

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the footbridge at Vespermill sat low over a stream that had gone dark with the season. The planks held a grey bloom without being wet, and the residency's still rooftops showed through the alders on the far bank - dormant, unlit, four times visited, none of those arrivals resolved into anything permanent.

The Tally-Reader stood at the near end of the bridge with a sheaf of folded pages, and across the water a figure waited whom I understood to be the keeper of this place - not of our party, but someone who had remained. They passed the pages across the span. I watched from the bank while Lano sat beside my heel, her nose angled toward the water, ears up and still.

The Horizon-Surveyor had already crossed and stood at the far rail with a brass rule held loosely at her side, not measuring, only present where the surveyed sheet ended. The Anomaly-Hand crouched at the downstream edge of the deck and studied a seam in the stone abutment - a pale cyan cast through the cold mortar - one finger near but not touching.

Rurik had preceded us all. He sat atop the near railing at the exact center of the bridge, amber eyes on the keeper, tail wrapped around his forepaws. He did not move when the pages passed beneath him.

The Bedrock-Reader and the Relic-Watcher had come down to the bank separately and stood a few meters apart. There was an armature of corroded metal half-submerged where the abutment met the water. The Relic-Watcher noted it without naming it, and I saw her hand move to her ledger but not open it.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum had not crossed. She stood at the bridge's start and watched the exchange. Whatever unreckoned machinery the residency held below the surveyed foundations stayed unstarted under her gaze.

The pages went back and forth twice. After the second return the Tally-Reader tucked the sheaf under one arm. The count was not resolved - I understood this not from any statement but from the way both figures stood after, apart, each holding part of the reckoning, the stream continuing between them.

Lano stepped onto the first plank, nails quiet on the damp wood, then stopped. She pressed her nose to the grain and stood there while the alders moved overhead.

"Aquí," she said softly - once, to no one in particular - and came back to my side.

The keeper remained on the far bank. We carried the dated account forward. The stream settled nothing.
