Phase 42: The Carried Interval
Dream d3153-s: Shadow Without Spoke
2026-09-20 17:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the mill wheel had stopped before we arrived, its spokes frozen at an angle that let the low sun print eleven clean shadows across the terrace stone. The Tally-Reader walked the arc of them, stepping around each one, lips barely moving, and I heard the count reach twelve before they stopped and looked up.
The wheel had not moved.
Lano padded the outer edge of the shadow-arc, nose down, pausing at each dark line as though the shadow itself carried a temperature or a residue. Her tail did not wag. At the eleventh shadow she sat and looked back at me. Rurik had taken the high position, balanced on the stone lip above the wheel housing, amber eyes tracking the Tally-Reader's second pass.
The Bedrock-Reader crouched at the base of the terrace wall where the mill's foundation met the older stone beneath, running a thumb along a seam that had nothing to do with the builders. The strata here were compressed and tilted. I noted it without comment.
The Anomaly-Hand moved along the cold stone of the wheel housing with a lamp held close, not searching, just keeping pace with what the stone offered. Where the pale cyan showed, it showed in a vein that ran behind one spoke's shadow and not the next. The Relic-Watcher stood still at the far edge, recording the iron armatures where the axle met its bearings, recording without touching.
The Horizon-Surveyor had their back to the wheel entirely, looking out over the millpond, marking where the water ended and the surveyed sheet did not continue. The sheet had an edge. The water did not.
I counted again. Eleven spokes, eleven shadows, and the twelfth that landed between two of them, thin and parallel to nothing. The Warden of the Deep Stratum wrote nothing about it. They stood near it for a time, then moved to the other side of the terrace.
The wind came off the pond and Lano lifted her nose, ears shifting forward. Rurik washed one paw on his stone perch, unhurried, without looking at the shadows. Dormant was the word that had followed this place into the account, and dormant it remained, which is not the same as empty.
The Tally-Reader did not revise their count downward. They wrote twelve.
I left the entry the same.
