Dream d3141-s: The Rail Arrived Warm

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the ash track brought us into Cindergreen at the hour when cold still held the grass, each blade stiff and faintly silver. The rail appeared before the residency itself - a single run of iron, warm to the touch in a way the morning had not yet earned, lying flat through the frost-white field as though warmth were something it had carried in from somewhere else.

I laid my palm against it. The Relic-Watcher moved alongside without touching, recording each low bracket where the armature married iron to stone. The Tally-Reader counted from the far end back, arriving at a number she wrote once and did not revise.

Lano moved ahead of us through the cold grass, dew gathering on her coat until she was half-white from the ground up. She stopped where the rail stopped: at open ground, the terminal ballast gone, the sheet's edge confirmed by absence. She sat there and looked back. Her nose worked the air where the iron ended.

Rurik arrived at the terminus ahead of the Horizon-Surveyor and settled exactly where iron gave way to nothing, tail drawn close, amber gaze on some middle distance we did not share.

The Horizon-Surveyor placed her rod at the open edge and recorded the discrepancy between the rail's actual terminus and the boundary marked on the surveyed sheet. The Anomaly-Hand found a cyan seam at the base of the cold stone beneath the track - perpendicular to the rail's direction, descending - and noted its width and angle without following it down.

The Bedrock-Reader pressed her hands to the ground beside the last tie, reading through ash and compacted soil for what the strata said about the depth of foundation here. The Warden of the Deep Stratum stood above and recorded only the duration of her listening. No explanation was offered or asked for.

I walked the rail's length twice. The first time, Lano fell in at my heel halfway along and stayed there until we reached the open ground again. The second time, the rail was cooler than it had been - not cold, but settling toward it. Rurik had moved to a bracket-stone some distance back and washed one paw in the thin sun.

Lano lifted her head once, looking toward the open ground, and said calor in the way small dogs name things they cannot hold.
