Dream d3136-s: The Disc, the Balance

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the workbench faced the harbour window and the light came in flat and grey, the kind that makes shadows without edges. I drew three columns on the sheet: the disc, the balance, the arriving boat. The Tally-Reader watched my hand without speaking, her finger tracing the air above each header as I inked it in.

Lano had found a corner near the iron leg of the bench. She curled there, nose tucked against her tail, but one eye stayed open. When the Relic-Watcher passed the doorway with the long rolled papers under their arm, her ear lifted and settled again.

The Anomaly-Hand was in the far corner of the workroom, crouched where the cold slate floor met the wainscoting. The pale cyan seam ran there, low and thin, the width of a thumb. They made no move to name what they saw. They only marked the position in their own ledger and stood.

Rurik had taken the warm spot beside the brazier. He sat with his legs tucked under, amber eyes half-closed, watching the smoke find the ceiling. When the Bedrock-Reader entered and set a core sample on the side table, grey shale with one pale stripe through it, Rurik's tail moved once, then stopped.

The Horizon-Surveyor leaned over the window edge to sight the breakwater. Outside, in the harbour mouth, the arriving boat was still a distance out. Not yet at the bollard. Not yet within the column's reach. I wrote nothing in the third column. The disc column held its figures from the morning. The balance column held one entry, a partial measure, carried from the previous account.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum came to the bench and looked at the columns but said nothing. The machinery below Larkmarket was not recorded here. We had all heard it through the floor for three days, the low grinding that stopped at midnight and resumed before dawn. It belonged to their log. I did not ask what it was.

Lano lifted her head. Her nose worked the air. Then she stood, walked to the door, and sat facing out toward the harbour. The boat was drawing closer. The third column waited.

The Tally-Reader uncapped her ink and waited beside me. Not to fill it. Only to be ready when the count was real.
