Dream d3110-s: The Carried Measure

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the coastal road ended at a ridge of pale stone and we carried two readings inland on a length of dry cord. The morning smell of the sea was still in our clothes when the ground changed under our feet to something older, soil that pressed back against the boot.

The Tally-Reader had counted the posts, each one, from the last survey stake to the present position. They held the number in their mouth the way you hold a name you do not want to say aloud too soon. The Bedrock-Reader crouched at the first exposed stratum and pressed both palms flat. Not reading. Listening. Lano sat beside them, nose working at a crack in the stone, one white paw lifted.

We had left two readings at the coastal station, tied fast with the cord, and what we carried now was the gap between them. Not the numbers themselves but what the numbers implied. The Anomaly-Hand had traced a pale cyan seam in the foundation stone before we turned inland. It ran horizontal for maybe four meters and then bent at an angle no natural deposit takes. I measured the angle with the transit. I wrote nothing yet.

The Horizon-Surveyor stopped at a rise where the coastal view was still available behind us. They stood for a long time with the instrument to their eye. Rurik appeared at the edge of the scrub and walked straight to the highest point of the ridge, settled himself there, staring out at the water we were leaving. His tail moved once.

The Warden of the Deep Stratum found the machinery at the inland edge of the site: three iron armatures half buried in the alluvium, their joints still articulated, their purpose not written in any register I carry. We logged them. We settled no explanation. That is the work.

Lano trotted ahead, looped back, trotted ahead again, the way she does when she knows we are moving and she approves of the direction. At the crest of the slope she stopped and looked down into the inland draw below, ears forward. "Mira," she said, barely audible, to no one and everyone.

The Relic-Watcher made a note of the monolith at the tree line: iron core, stone facing, no inscription. They did not name it. They never name them. I added it to the sheet.

The cord was in my pack, tied around two rolls of paper. The interval it measured was twenty-three meters of coastal road that no survey had claimed before this morning. We carried it inland and it stayed exact.
