Dream d3105-s: Between the Wet Mark and the Dry

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the pier end at Vesperwharf smelled of iron and brine and something older underneath both - a mineral cold that the Bedrock-Reader names without speaking, pressing two fingers to the piling where the tideline has printed its record in salt and weed.

Two marks. The lower one is wet; the upper one is dry. The Bedrock-Reader crouches and watches the water move toward the lower mark without exceeding it. This is the interval we have been given to witness: not what the tide has reached but what it has not, and whether that gap is narrowing.

The Anomaly-Hand runs a slow palm along the piling below the water's surface and draws it back. The pale cyan is there - the cold light that does not originate in the sky, emerging in thin seams where the iron armature meets the older material beneath. No one comments on it. The Warden of the Deep Stratum opens a notebook and writes nothing yet.

Rurik arrived before any of us. He is on the highest crossbeam, amber eyes fixed on the horizon-line, and when the Horizon-Surveyor raises an instrument to take the measure of the far edge, Rurik flicks his tail once and looks away as though the reading confirmed something he had already settled.

Lano is at the base of the piling, nose working the air near the waterline. She does not step into the water. After a moment she sits, ears level, and says quietly: "Quieto."

The Tally-Reader counts the visible marks on this piling - four in total, two of which have no known correlation to any surveyed datum. She records all four. The count is the count.

What stays with me is the stillness in the gap between the marks. The water has reached the lower mark twice today and retreated both times, leaving no sign except its own record, the thin bright meniscus pulling back like a breath drawn in. The upper mark is dry in a way that feels considered - not accidental but held, the way a hand holds a measurement without writing it yet.

The Relic-Watcher stands with her back to the pier and faces the water and does not move. Whatever she is watching, she does not name it. The survey sheet is in her case, unopened.

The Bedrock-Reader straightens and looks at the gap between the two marks for a long time. Then she looks at the water. Then she looks at the gap again. She does not close the notebook. She does not open it.

The interval remains. The tide does not decide.
