Phase 42: The Carried Interval
Dream d3103-s: The Cord Across the Shadow
2026-09-17 07:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the quay opened onto still water, and the light came off the surface at an angle so low it turned every iron ring into a small dark crescent on the stone.
The Relic-Watcher drew a white cord from the bundle at their hip and laid it slowly across the shadow of the third ring. They did not speak. They settled onto one knee and waited. Rurik took the top of a nearby bollard and sat with his tail curled tight around his feet, amber eyes half-open, watching what the Relic-Watcher watched.
Lano moved the length of the quay from west to east with her nose to the stone. She paused at the second ring, then the fourth. At the fourth she sat and watched the water.
The Anomaly-Hand found the cyan seam where it surfaced at the quay's lip, running into the ironwork at the waterline. They traced it with two fingers held just above the surface, not touching, and set its position into the sheet with a bracket and three digits.
The Bedrock-Reader followed a fracture line that began in the upper course of stone and descended toward the older material beneath. Where it passed below the waterline they recorded the depth of its last visible point and left the rest unmarked.
The Tally-Reader stood at the midpoint and counted the rings aloud: fourteen above water, two below. The number entered the running count without ceremony.
The Horizon-Surveyor went to the quay's far end and measured the bearing where the surveyed sheet dissolved into open water. Rurik dropped from the bollard and went ahead of them, settling in the opening at the quay's end, facing outward. The Horizon-Surveyor stepped around him. He did not move.
The Warden of the Deep Stratum stood before a rusted capstan near the eastern head and wrote that it had not turned and that no part of it showed recent disturbance.
The cord had not moved. The shadow had moved. The ring had not caught the cord.
Then the light shifted by a degree - the kind of shift you feel before you see - and the cord caught.
The Relic-Watcher did not lift their head. They made a mark in the margin of the sheet, small and clean.
Lano's tail moved once.
