Dream d3095-s: Low Water at the Barrier

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we stood at the harbor mouth as the tide withdrew, and the base of the granite wall came visible: courses of fitted rock larger than any block the craneyard had ever lifted, set flush and dry without mortar I could see. The Bedrock-Reader crouched at the waterline and ran a hand along the join. Lano sniffed at the wet granite, nose working in short rapid pulls, ears tipped forward.

The Tally-Reader noted the width of the barrier in the log, not an estimate but a counted step-measurement, thirty-seven paces at the widest reach. That number sat in the record without rounding.

The Relic-Watcher turned to face the seaward side, where a lattice of iron armatures emerged from the lower courses as the water fell. No ring, no cleat, nothing consistent with rope or anchor. The Warden of the Deep Stratum looked at them a long time and made no notation except their presence and position, which matched nothing in the surveyed sheet. Rurik came down from the upper course where he had been perching, picked his way across the wet rock to the nearest armature, and settled at its base staring at the dark water beyond. He did not move from that spot while the rest of us worked.

The Anomaly-Hand found the first seam. It ran vertically along a block face just below the tidal mark: a pale cyan emission line, roughly a centimeter wide, no heat, no sound. I held a measuring tape against it while the Hand noted the position. Three more seams appeared as the tide continued to drop, none of them parallel. The Bedrock-Reader said they followed a structural fault in the granite, not any course of construction. That was the last interpretation spoken aloud.

The Horizon-Surveyor worked at the seaward end with the sighting rod, measuring the exact point where the surveyed sheet ended against the visible coastline beyond. It was not a dramatic boundary. The sheet simply stopped at a coordinate, and beyond that coordinate the coast continued, unreckoned and unnamed.

Lano trotted to the seaward edge and stood there, looking out, tail low. A small loose fragment lay at her feet. After a moment she took it up in her mouth and carried it back to where I stood, and dropped it. I looked down at it, then picked it up myself and turned it over in my hand. I left it in the log as found object, position noted, no explanation assigned.
