Beyond our reach, the surveyed sheet ended. The Horizon-Surveyor stood at the limit, tracing the line where the known world fell away into the unreckoned stratum. There, the architecture changed. Ancient cold ruins stood in the shadow of massive frontier ironworks, structures that the old census had never named. The Warden of the Deep Stratum walked among the machinery, logging the grinding of gears that had no visible source, settling no explanation for the motion.

Lano sat at my feet, her white fur dusted with grey grit. Her nose twitched constantly as she tracked the scent of the deep iron.
