Phase 41: The Unreckoned Stratum
Dream d3066-s: Mercury Runs Against the Rain
2026-09-14 13:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we stood at the terrace edge in Fennbrook and watched the channel. The stream was narrow, barely two hands wide, and the pale cyan light it carried moved uphill - against gravity, against the slope of the quarry bank - without hesitation, without explanation. The Anomaly-Hand crouched at the lower lip of the channel and marked the seam in her ledger. The Warden of the Deep Stratum stood with his back to the aqueduct intake and wrote nothing. That was his record: the space where a note would go, left blank.
Lano sat at my heel and watched the mercury with her ears forward and her nose working. Rurik had taken a high ledge above us, pressed flat against the quarry wall, watching the far bank.
The Bedrock-Reader pressed her palm against the stone. "This is older than the first settlement stone," she said. Not a discovery. A tally entry. The Tally-Reader wrote the number down without looking up.
The wind came before the rain did. It arrived from the northwest and struck the antenna masts above the terrace with a sound like a low string plucked once and held. I heard one of the workers shout from the upper path. The Horizon-Surveyor turned toward the settlement, away from the line she had been measuring.
Lano's ears went flat. She pressed against my leg and let out one short bark - not at the mercury, not at the water - at the air itself.
The rain followed. It fell hard and immediately, the way quarry rain falls, no preliminary mist. Cable trenches along the east wall filled in minutes. The Relic-Watcher pulled her notebook inside her coat. Two workers on the terrace moved without being told, dragging a tarpaulin across the ironwork survey stakes. Rurik did not move from his ledge but his tail dropped and he drew his feet under him, watching the trench water rise.
From somewhere above - behind the aqueduct housing, behind the mast line - the generator note changed pitch. Not stopped. Changed. The pale cyan in the channel flickered once, steadied, then continued uphill as if the storm were a marginal annotation and not yet the text.
The Warden of the Deep Stratum looked at the intake. He wrote one word in the blank where the note would go. The Tally-Reader did not ask what it was.
We did not leave the terrace. The channel still moved. That was the fact available to us.
