Phase 41: The Unreckoned Stratum
Dream d3055-s: Lanterns at the Reckoning's Edge
2026-09-13 17:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the perimeter lane of Irongreen ran between the last cottage windows and the dark that began past the fence posts, and we were walking it as the shift workers finished and turned toward their doors.
The Tally-Reader held the sheet flat against her forearm as she walked, reading it in the last of the window-light. She said nothing about the count. She did not need to. The number was already settled and would not be rounded.
Lano trotted ahead along the lane's edge, nose low, then stopped where the fence ended and the gravel thinned to bare ground. Her ears went flat, then lifted. She sat down and watched the darkness ahead.
The Horizon-Surveyor passed her and drove a peg at the exact place where the gravel ended. That was the edge. The surveyed sheet stopped there.
Rurik had been somewhere behind us for most of the walk. Now he came through the gap in the last fence post, amber eyes catching the lantern one of the workers had left on a step. He went past the peg without hesitation and sat down ten feet into the unreckoned ground, facing away from us.
The Bedrock-Reader crouched at the peg and pressed one palm to the earth. She said the substrate here was older than the settlement's foundation by a significant measure, and left it at that.
Beyond where Rurik sat, the Anomaly-Hand had already found what she was looking for: a pale cyan seam running along a low ridge of exposed stone, the kind that appears in ancient bedrock and does not correspond to any vein marked on the old census. She noted its bearing without explanation.
The Warden of the Deep Stratum stood beside an iron armature half-buried in the slope. Its original purpose was not apparent. She logged its dimensions and its orientation and the fact that it was not recent work, and she settled no explanation.
The workers behind us had gone inside. The cottage windows were warm squares now, and Irongreen was already quiet at our backs.
Lano made a small sound in her chest, not a bark. She picked up a flat pebble from near the peg and carried it forward, setting it down beside the armature, where I took it from her and placed it at the base of the exposed stone as a marker.
The Relic-Watcher recorded the marker's position.
We did not go further that night. The sheet was full, the count was complete, and the unreckoned stratum would still be there in the morning, older than all of it, waiting without impatience for anyone who cared to measure it.
