Phase 41: The Unreckoned Stratum
Dream d3048-s: Where the Counted Ground Ends
2026-09-13 08:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the track out of Slatemoss was all loose shale and pale gravel, and the light came in flat and grey from the east before the sun had cleared the ridge. We walked in a loose column, the Horizon-Surveyor at the front with the surveying pole laid over one shoulder, the Tally-Reader at the back.
Rurik went ahead at the first fork without hesitation, choosing the left branch, and we followed. He padded a few meters, then sat down and stared at a low rise of bedrock emerging from the gravel like a shoulder rising out of water. The Bedrock-Reader crouched beside it, ran a hand along the exposed face, and said nothing for a long time. The rock was old in a different register than the Slatemoss foundations - strata laid before the first settlement mark, before the earliest census entry.
Lano's nose worked at the base of the outcrop, pressed to the gravel, ears flat. She stopped at a loose fragment with a faint cyan cast along one edge and sat back, watching it. The Anomaly-Hand crouched where she had paused and turned the fragment over. The emission ran perpendicular to the weathered face, barely visible in the growing light.
Beyond the outcrop the plains opened. The Horizon-Surveyor stopped at the last mapped reference point, drove the survey pole into the gravel, and marked the log. Eight hundred and twelve paces from the Slatemoss gate. The sheet ends here. Beyond this point: no entry number, no settlement record, no founding date.
The Tally-Reader called the count. Fifty-three places walked, seventy-five unreached on the surveyed sheet. What lay ahead carried no number yet.
An iron armature rose from the gravel two hundred meters further on. The Relic-Watcher circled it once without touching it. Riveted frame, four uprights, cross-members at two heights. No inscription. The Warden of the Deep Stratum opened the log to a fresh page. Rurik pressed against the Warden's leg once, then walked on to the armature and circled it the same way the Relic-Watcher had, and sat at its base and blinked.
We did not name it. The Relic-Watcher recorded its dimensions and the grain direction of the iron. The Warden wrote: location, bearing, dimensions, material. There is no explanation column in the Warden's log.
The gravel plains ran to the horizon without interruption. No tree line. No smoke. The Horizon-Surveyor took a bearing and wrote it down.
Lano trotted out ahead of the column, ears up, and we followed.

Note
A column of surveyors marks the edge of the mapped world where the gravel meets an unnamed iron armature. The heavy silence of the void reveals the terror of the unrecorded.
