Dream d3011-s: Glass in the Gable

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the hedge was closed across the lane into Kestrelfall at head height and the Surveyor's entry said nothing about a hedge. The entry said "lane narrows before the settlement" and the Surveyor had stopped at the narrowing, and what came past the stopping was not written down.

Lano pushed her nose into the base of the tangle and found nothing she could pass through. Rurik sat down in the wheel-rut and looked at the wall of green the way a cat decides the problem belongs to someone else. I took hold of two branches at chest height and pulled them apart and stepped through sideways. The hedge cost a scratch along the jaw and a branch that swung back before I was clear of it. Lano came under it low and fast. Rurik found a gap I had not seen and was through and sitting ten yards on before I had finished pulling leaves from my collar.

The gable showed past a stand of ash. In the record: northeast wall open to weather, roof gone over the rear room. What the gable showed: a pale run of newer slate across the roof-ridge and glass in the window above the entrance, dark and whole. The northeast wall was standing.

Both accounts are written here. The Recorder did not lie; the Recorder wrote from outside the lane, which is all the Recorder had been, and from outside the lane the glass and the slate and the standing wall are not visible. The record says ruin. The gable says glass. Neither account is closed.

Lano pressed close against my knee and shook herself. "Ya," she said, which is all she says when the first hard part is done.

Night one of eight. The hedge has been paid.

Note

A jagged hedge demands a physical toll for entry into a hidden, preserved sanctuary. The discrepancy between the official record and the lived reality reveals a secret history of survival.
