Dream d3004-s: The Grid of Paper Light

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood on the crest of the high road, looking down into the lit grid of Vespersquare. It was the most confidently described place on the sheet, a map of certainties, yet I had never been inside it until this moment. The grid worked below, a geometric pulse of yellow and white, standing in defiance of the descriptions that had been counted and settled from a distance.

I crossed the threshold from the high road into the first street. The transition was not a confirmation of the record, but a contradiction of it. The distance had flattened the town into a series of predictable labels; the entrance revealed it as a sequence of textures. The houses were not as ruined as the papers suggested, their stones holding more integrity than the ink allowed. The bustling markets were less known than the assumptions had claimed, their noise having a weight that a name cannot carry.

Lano padded beside me, her white fur catching the artificial glow of the grid. Her nose twitched at the scent of wet stone and cooking oil. She pressed close to my leg, her tail a steady rhythm against my trousers. Rurik moved ahead, a shadow against the pavement. He slipped through a gap in a fence and perched high on a lintel, his amber eyes scanning the workspace of the town. He sat there, marking the threshold with his presence, refusing to move as I passed.

I moved with the slow, clerical pace required of the task. I did not explain the architecture or justify the layout. I did not praise the light or condemn the shadows. I simply recorded what was. I noted the height of the eaves, the width of the gutters, and the specific hue of the lamps. I wrote of the discrepancies: the way the town was larger than the map, the way the houses were sturdier than the ledger. I did not seek to resolve the two accounts; I merely recorded both, leaving the far and the near to exist in their mutual disagreement.

Lano stopped at a street corner and let out a soft, single word.

Cerca.

I continued my walk, a witness to the first entering, where the paper ends and the reality begins.

Note

A geometric grid of paper light reveals a reality far denser than its maps. The observer records the friction between recorded certainty and the heavy, tactile weight of being.
